Need A Word Processor And Powerpoint Viewer/Maker For Linux

    Hello,

I have started using linux again and the programme that used to come with Suse back in 2003 was called "open office" since this is 2011 and im now using Ubuntu which suits me much better I need a word processor that can support .doc or create files that I can then open and edit with Microsoft word in university. Is there any word processor out there that sounds like what im looking for?

Lastly I also need atleast a PPT viewer to see my lecture slides and a program that can make powerpoint presentations or can be used and edited with Powerpoint would be great for my presentation work.

Some have suggested that i use the original microsoft programmes under Wine but thats not really an option for me.

    Hello and welcome!

As far as I now Open Office has a pretty dependable word processor, spreadsheet and even a powerpoint capable release. Most specially at this time.

Just save your work by clicking "save as" and everything is self explanatory from there. I am sure you can open them in Microsoft and make good powerpoint presentations with it.

OpenOffice.org is what you need. Most linux distros come with this preinstalled but if it isn't, you'll find a copy of it (or its unbranded fork LibreOffice) in your distro's repository.

OOo contains Writer (which is like Word but a lot better), Calc (like Excel), Draw and Impress (like Powerpoint). They can all read and write the corresponding MS formats so you can create .ppt files in Impress and play them back in Powerpoint (or vice versa).

Don't use MSOffice in wine; it's a clumsy solution and the software is definitely inferior.

The only thing that you would want to look out for as far as a power point replacement are matching fonts. Opening a presentation made with OOo will not look the same if you don't have the font installed on the machine that you're viewing it in.

Be sure to install Microsoft fonts
    Code:
    sudo apt-get install msttcorefonts
This will give you better compatilbility
