    ubuntu problems

hey everyone i am new to linux but finally managed to install ubuntu 10.10 on a separate internal hard drive . i am actually on linux writing this post(probably only exiting to just me). i was however wondering about a few issues i have found with this os and have come up with a couple of questions that i hope someone can help me with:

    1) why does it freeze randomly and probably a little too often (way too often to compete with any other os)? any way to fix or minimize this?
2)internet can be fast once on a web page for some certain amount of time but any new navigation is quite slow. the cache of this particular hdd is 16mb but i have 8 gigs of ram and 4 processors.
why is it so "slow" and is there any way to fix this?

    thanks

Which Graphics Card do you have?

Execute this command in Terminal :
    Code:
    lspci | grep -i vga
    Post output here.

You have to install ATI Driver. Check in System - Administration - Additional Drivers. Does it list ATI/AMD proprietary FGLRX graphics driver? Select it and Ubuntu will download and install driver for you.

It might be the speed of your provider that is in question here. What speed did you subscribe to please?

The problems I've had in the past with Ubuntu (slow-downs, freezes, etc.) haven't been so evident in other distributions --- and so although I have Ubuntu installed, I tend to use it rather infrequently.

Unless you have a definite reason for wanting to use Ubuntu in particular, I'd try something else instead (e.g. Zenwalk, Arch, etc. --- or if mind-boggling quantities of free software are your thing, you could install Debian). They may not be quite as user-friendly as Ubuntu (though they're hardly user-hostile), but they should tell you whether it's simply an issue that Ubuntu has with your set-up, or whether it goes deeper. If you find that you are still encountering these problems on something as stable as, say, Slackware, then that would be disturbing...
