Cross-Compiling ucLinux under Host
Hi,
I am new in the Linux world.
I would like to start a new project with ucLinux on MCF5282 and would like some information from people who already used it.
1) My computer has Windows XP, therefore I need a Linux Host to be able to cross-compile, debug my application (ucLinux + my application). Which host is recommended: Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora or other?
2) Did anyone used virtual machines on XP as a host for ucLinux compiling/debugging? Is that recommendable or better have a dual boot computer (XP / Linux)?
Any hints or recommendations will be much appreciated.
Thanks,
S

You can download and use for free Oracle's VirtualBox virtual machine manager, and install Linux in a VM, running on your Windows XP host. On that system (the Linux VM), you can install the ucLinux tool chain and build them there.
Sometimes, real fast is almost as good as real time.

In theory, yes VM can be used but I would appreciate if someone can confirm using it and being reliable and robust.
Thanks.

Well, I've been using it for 3 years to run (using a Linux host) Windows XP, Solaris x86, QNX, and several versions of Linux. I use it daily, all day, with no problems to speak of. The current versions are very stable, or at least have been for me. FWIW, I run VirtualBox on my workstation (CentOS 5 and SL6), and my laptops (Ubuntu 9.04 and 10.10) equally well.

Thank you very much. I will use Oracle-VM.
Since you have been using ucLinux, which Linux host do you recommend to install in VM (Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora)?
UcLinux is a strip down version of which Linux ?
I couldn’t find any forum dedicated to ucLinux. Just found a mailing list. Did I miss any forum dedicated to ucLinux in particular?
Once again, thanks.

Well, I don't run ucLinux tool chain on Linux hosts. I do run an ARM tool chain. But I don't run it in a VM, rather directly on my Linux workstation. I think that any of the mentioned Linux distributions would be just fine. Ubuntu is a Debian derivative. Fedora is from Red Hat, and I use a Red Hat clone (Scientific Linux) for my main workstation.
