DistroWatch.com: Put the fun back into computing. Use Linux, BSD.

    My Best recommend

I also ran AntiX 8.5 on a simililar setup before I sold it to a person who wanted a cheap Laptop but wanted Linux. It was a IBM 390E Pentium 366hz, 128MB ram (I bumped it up), 700MB /swap, 6Gig Micro Hardrive (out of mp3 player), Wireless PCMCIA card, Ethernet PCMCIA Card, Laptop.

I ran a P III 500 with an 8 GB hd with antiX 8.5 and 384 MB ram. If you can upgrade to the max amount of ram for your system.

DSL (Damn Small Linux) is designed to run on low powered machines, and take up as little space as possible. If that's too mainstream, you could try Finnix. Xubuntu is also designed to use fewer system resources than it's sister project Ubuntu, so you might try that.

Try Xubuntu, Gentoo, Knoppix (can run and save to CD), or Damn Small Linux.

I would highly recommend SliTaz. It's insanely small, and runs well on even the most modest systems. The CD image weighs in at around 50MB. It can run on as little 128MB of RAM. It has a relatively large number of packages available for it, and almost all configuration can be done through GUI tools. Good luck.
