i use the command pppoeconf to configure the connection then use the command pon to turn it on
    Code:
    # pppoeconf
    # pon dsl-provider
    its quite simple

If you are running a Linux GUI, the network manager has an option to create a DSL connection that will take care of all the PPOE and other cruft you need to do, and will keep the configuration so you won't need to futz with it the next time you boot.
Sometimes, real fast is almost as good as real time.
