Welcome to the forum. You can go to distrowatch.com and search for beginner distro's to see what appeals to you. My favorites for a low spec compute are Lubuntu, AntiX, Legacy OS, or Puppy linux.

i installed linux mint on an old dell laptop. mint is "light weight". only problem i noted was antiquated video card. mint is fast, easy install.

    Hi giamma71.
I have a similar vintage Satelite (manufactured 2003, as was your Portege) due to a none functional IDE1 channel "Lucid Puppy" was my only choice as there is a floppy image available to start the install.
If your able to boot from the CD drive puppy is a no install, it will run live from CD, if you wish to run Puppy from a USB drive use the floppy to boot from if your machine has one and does not support native USB boots.
I installed Lucid Puppy to the HDD with a 2 gig swap.

Lucid Puppy flies on this machine! and is probably the fastest distro available.
    Good luck.

    thank you for your answers.
i don't mind on running it from a pen drive or a floppy, i want to install it on the HD. i need a version for writing on latex with emacs and coding in C. do u think puppy is ok for theset things?
p.s. if it is possible i would like to use other mathematical- scientific programs like R, mathematica(wolfram) and matlab.
    thanks

Depending on which Puppy you choose.
You might be better to ask on the Puppy Forum to ascertain if Puppy will do what you need.

May I suggest Mepis? I had Suse 11.4 on a Dell Inspiron 2200 , way too heavy. This week I switched to Mepis and it flies.
