    First time install

Just waiting for my windows backup cd's to finish writing now. I played around with mint 10 earlier running from disc and definitely liked it. I also have an Ubuntu disc that I can install as well (need to get a feel for them as many here so its personal choice.)

Now my biggest question is what to do with my Windows 7 OS. I was going to keep it at least initially while I get a feel for linux, but clearing the disorder that is windows is a must. I was planning on doing a factory recovery (already backed up to external), mostly to clear the embeded programs in the registry that I despise windows so much for. My plan is to factory recovery, run windows updates, get avast again, malwarebyte, comodo firewall (windows firewall off), and reinstall my office package. Then just install Mint 10, partition windows to 50GB.

Does anyone foresee any issues here, I saw one mention of problems with doing a recovery before dual booting.

Thanks, everyone. Glad to finally make it Linux.

Edit: BTW ASUS laptop U52F series, 4GB RAM, intel i5 processor, 64 bit, hard drive 574GB.

I think you have a sound plan, that is how I would do it. Keep windows while you learn because you will get stuck somewhere and you will want to use Windows to run games and what not.
EDIT: Hello and Welcome to the forums also!

    Shrunk windows, partioning disk

Fresh install of windows 7 x64, shrunk it down in disk management to 24gb, freeing almost 22. Now my question is what do I do with the 550gb unallocated space. I wanted.to through.some towards windows, but wasn't sure the best way to format and label the remainder for Linux, also how much should I give Linux?

10-15 Gb should be plenty for Linux. Leave it unpartitioned and when you start the Linux installer, be sure to tell it to use the unpartitioned free space.

    Swap space?

I saw on a how to for ubuntu, that you need to portion about 7gb as a swap space then before u start the install. Is this necessary for mint as well?

NO, I would not use that much. I would use, in your case....1 GB for swap.
