The distribution with the most software

    Hi everybody,

Can you please tell me what distribution has the most software with it ? I mean one that come with many cds of software that get all install at once while the first install. I heard about this a while back but I can't remember the name of it, I think it was mandrivia. A free one but I am curious for the other one that cost money.

    Thanks

Hello and welcome to the forums!

Just guessing, but Debian is probably the distro with the most software packaged for it.

Ubuntu has a huge library, and the Ulttimate version has a lot of programs, codecs, drivers, etc included on the DVD. Available from distrowatch.com.

You can download all the DVDs for a distro, including Debian or Ubuntu, and install them, or you can just use the basic install CD and install the packages you want while online. The latter is what most people do, because it takes a very long time to download all the DVDs, which contain the entire repository for the distro, including every available package, most of which you will never need or use. But if you want to download the entire repository, you're certainly able to do that. Just plan for many hours of downloads.

I don't even remember the exact number anymore, but at one time the full Debian distro came on about 25 CDs, or on 5 DVDs. Maybe someone will correct those numbers if they are inaccurate. I don't know why anyone would ever want to install all of that, though.

O.SDisk.com sells dvds for open Suse that has most packages available for it. Cost is about 25 U.S dollars. Suse has an involved interface and menu system which in my opinion is overbuilt and cumbersome. It's from another planet compared to Fedora or Mandriva. Mandriva's proprietary version was called Power-pack. Mageia is a Mandriva fork and is scheduled to have their first release the same month as Mandriva which I think is in May.

Debian comes on 8 dvds these days. No idea how many CDs. Only the first one is needed for an install or you can get the netinstall image.

My new blog. It's probably not as good as I think it is.
