    I think a friend of mine once did something like that using xwinwrap, you could take a look at it. It basically runs almost any command as the desktop wallpaper, or so I believe it does, I'm not sure.

    Although, as I recall it, I think he wasn't able to put the desktop icons on top of the screensaver he ran as the desktop.
