Printer installation issues, Ubuntu newbie
I've just recently started with Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal and am having trouble installing hplip-3.11.5 for HP Photosmart C4680. Terminal goes through all the setup stuff and then stops and displays a message to the effect of 'no feedback after 300seconds', i've tried restarting and running hp-setup from Terminal, but HP manager does not recognize my printer (there's nothing showing up in the device list). Can anyone help?
I've been through enabling/disabling repositories (one of the setup instructions) and that doesn't seem to work.
I've not tried CUPS, but all the advice i've had for the past while has said to install hplip.

Have you tried to install correct drivers or re-installing?

Or check out this thread ---> Printer problems too
Might not help, but IDK if your using HP Manager, or the built in "Printing" manager that ubuntu has already, could be the same thing you're talking about but just giving more suggestions.

I'm running the following at the Terminal window:
$ sh hplip-3.11.5.run
it goes through an automatic setup routine and asks for my OS version, I tell it 'Ubuntu 11.04', and it goes again through a series of steps that all check out fine until I reach a window that comes up and says 'select connection', which on my printer is a USB, and it just doesn't seem to detect the printer via the USB.
One instance it asked me to turn off 'CD' as a source of updates and turn on 'Universe' and 'Multiverse'. I did this and it still told me the same thing, and HP manager still didn't detect anything when I plug it in.

I get the following output during installation in Terminal:
INSTALLATION NOTES
------------------
Enable the universe/multiverse repositories. Also be sure you are using the Ubuntu "Main" Repositories. Disable the CD-ROM/DVD source if you do not have the Ubuntu installation media inserted in the drive. During the install process you will be added to the lp and lpadmin group, please quit the installer before the setup stage, log out, log back in, and run hp-setup to complete the install.
Please read the installation notes. Press <enter> to continue or 'q' to quit:
I've enabled/disabled the suggested repositories and re-run the setup, but it tells me there is no detection after 300seconds

I have an HP Photosmart C4680 All-in-One. In Ubuntu 10.10, I just went to the System tab, Administration, and clicked on Printing and in the window which opens, clicked Add and it showed the printer under Devices. Clicked Forward tab and got a message Searching for Drivers, then a window in which to enter a Name, Description and (optionally) Location. After completing this, it asked if I wanted a test page printed, clicked yes and it printed out.
Do you not have this option or is there some reason you want to do it from a terminal?
- 05-31-2011 #7He's saying it don't show up in the device list, but he's also saying it's in the HP manager. Is this HP manager you speak of, the "Printing" app that is already installed with ubuntu??but HP manager does not recognize my printer (there's nothing showing up in the device list).
I'm confused.
Cause if it's not, try what yancek said.
But anyways,
If it is the same one, (this sounds stupid but) have you tried to plug it into another USB input on your computer? Is the printer on? Is it lighting up like it's on? Did this printer work on another OS (windows, mac) before you installed ubuntu? If it did, does it still work on that same OS as of now?
Are you getting any errors in Terminal? Or just exactly what you put in your reply (INSTALLATION NOTES)?
Put what you're getting in Terminal on here with copy-paste. Use the "#" button at the top of when your writing a message to put the Terminal outputs in a box to make it a little easier to read and distinguish from what you're saying from the Terminal readings
The errors your getting may help a little better with troubleshooting than the installation notes, unless that's all your really getting at the end, which is weird.
Just trying to help
