Looking at your text file. Any top ten at Distrowatch should be fine. Google you laptop make and model number to see if any install instructions are posted on the net for your make and model of laptop for any distro you want to try out. Live cd is also a good way to check what works and does not work on your gear and will not affect Vista.

I have actually started using ubuntu 11.04 but the internet is slower than Vista and it freezes quite often.

I love the lack of viruses and the quick start up speed.

However, I have found it difficult to mount files, that I have downloaded, to the cd drive and run downloaded windows programmes.

Thanks for the advice and any more help would be great guys!

Looking at the top ten distributions on distrowatch I think I would need to choose one that is:

    - Faster on my system than ubuntu 11.04

    - Makes it easy to download and mount windows programmes so they can be used without a cd present

What?? You don't mount files, you mount filesystems. I'm not sure what you are trying to do here? You can't run windows programs in Linux without some additional software like wine. I think it would be helpful if you indicated exactly which windows "programs" you expect to run. Linux is not windows but it is much easier to run windows programs on Linux than the reverse. More details on what you are trying to do.

No I have wine, I just do not have the cds for some programmes and when I try to mount the iso files to the cd drive a message displays cannot mount.

To clarify, you have Ubuntu 11.04 installed and you also have wine installed and set up? You have some windows programs that are not on CD but you have downloaded and are trying to run them within wine? These are iso files? Of what programs? How are you trying to mount them? I haven't used wine for years and when I did it was minimal. Hopefully, someone more familiar will see your post.

How are you running the mount command? For example, I usually do something like:
    Code:
     mount -v -o loop /tmp/Windows_CD.iso /mnt/iso
Make sure your mount point (e.g., /mnt/iso) already exists. And run the command as root (or use sudo). It should use the iso9660 filesystem, your kernel should support that, by default.

Wine is no Windows, but sometimes it works okay. However, it can take extra work to make your fave prog run. Like Yancek said, provide more details about what you're trying to run and your software versions of everything...

Just my limited opinion, but try Ubuntu 10.04 instead of 11.04. Several posters have had issues with 11.04, and it feels slower on my system.
