    Question Will it work?

I got an older computer that as windows 98 on it. I was thinking of putting either fedora or Ubuntu on it but I was wondering if it would be too old. Its got 700 some megs of ram and a fairly new ATI video card, but I only got 20 gigs of Drive space on two 10 gig drives. If I cant put one of these 2 on it please tell me something similar I can run, and if I can could I get a step by step set of directions on how I can replace Win 98 with a new OS

    Edit:
I forgot what type and speed of processor I have but its an AMD Duron and its around 900MHz

    Need ram specs also

    Doh: missed the 700mb part.

Any lightweight desktop like E17, LXDE, XFCE, Icewm,Fluxbox with fedora or Ubuntu should be OK. I would make a 1gig swap partition to be on the safe side before running any graphical installer also.

He's saying, yes it should work but you might not want to try the "normal" version. You want something lightweight.

Lubuntu, LegacyOS or AntiX would do well on those specs. Go to distrowatch.com and search for older computers, it will give you a longer list of distro's that do well on older hardware. If you want to check on recommended hardware or any other question, go to google.com/linux to get linux relevant answers. Play around with several live distro's and have fun.

Just a heads up notice: There is no more google.com/linux, it's only in the history books now.

Do I need an internet connection to finish installing. In my current situation Im on a wireless network and my other computer is a desktop that is a bit of a pain to move around.

For initial install no (not sure about fedora or ubuntu. only know antix) . But to load repositories and and update packages. Yes. There is probably no internal wireless pci card in it since you said Windows 98. Google for atheros chip or Ralink RT2561 chip pcmcia card which work pretty well for Linux wireless.
