    Hello and welcome aboard!

With 4 GB of RAM, you can run any Linux distro that you want. I'd recommend running the 64-bit version of your chosen distro if you want all the RAM to be detected. Any of the top 5 or so distros in the distro page hits ranking chart over at DistroWatch.com should be a good place to start trying different distros. Opensuse and Ubuntu are commonly used distros for laptops, but the other distros should also work. You can check the link in my signature for a couple of quizzes that might help you to pick your first distros. I'm not sure what might cause noise from a heat sink. Are you sure it isn't the fan causing the noise?

Actually installing any distros that you want to try and then testing them as you have time is the best route to take.

Good luck to you with the search.

    Fan control for dell laptops

    Check this one:

    packages.debian.org/search?keywords=i8kutils

(sorry for the link format, but I am not allowed to post links yet, just add http : // at the begining)

This is part for Debian, which should run fine in your laptop.

    Good luck
