how to cancel man command output

I ran: man ftp and was presented with 100 of pages of manual describing ftp command options etc. My problem is that ctrl-c won't cancel it, exit, end, etc have no effect. I cannot use this putty session again after having entered a man command and have to cancel the putty session and start over. How can a user cancel the man command output?

    Hello and welcome!

Did you try pressing the letter q key (for quit)?
