I recently upgraded to Ubuntu 11.10 ... not a big fan of unity ... so whats the best current distro that runs gnome 2 ?

I don't know of any easy answer, but if you go to distrowatch.com and scroll down the page to the top 100, you can click on each one you are interested in. This will bring up a brief description of each one, which should tell you if it uses gnome 2, 3 or other desktop.

A lot of distros are still using Gnome2. Have you tried Gnome Classic in Ubuntu 11.10? You can install it easily.
There will an option at Login windows to select Session. There are a few usage differences. Instead of right click, Atl+right click works on Panel and a few Applets are missing or do not work fine.Code:sudp apt-get install gnome-session-fallback
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.
