searching for open source progams
I'm looking for an open source program and I thought this would be a good place to ask since I used Linux for a while and always received good advice.
I am looking for a newspaper template where I can basically plug in my own headlines and text into already pre fabricated boxes. Photos would be a plus. Something simple that I can use to create a realistic looking weekly newspaper and export as PDF. Nothing that requires the use of gimp. Not sure if such a thing exists so thanks for any help.

I found an on line tool that does this: The Newspaper Clipping Image Generator - Create your own fun newspaper most programs wouldn't be made for something that specific. (also some useful advice: I am a little new to forums myself but it seems they are made more for solving technical problems and not matters of opinion. but hey we all make mistakes

Opinions abound, especially in the coffee lounge. You will find some you agree with, and some you wonder what they are smoking, but everyone gets their say on a matter.

well yes of course in the coffee lounge, but I am pretty sure that the point in forums (or at least this one) is to build a database of technical support info and that the coffee lounge was added as an afterthought. Now what is posted in this thread would be useful programs for doing something, and that might make sense now, but it won't in a couple of years when new programs come out that can do it better.
Also I found it on google pretty quickly.

I think LibreOffice has a template for this. I've never really investigated all the templates, and not this specific one, since I have no use for it, but I think you should be able to find something there.

I'm a big fan of LaTeX for lots of things, and I've used the newspaper package to great effect in the past:
CTAN web interface: Directory listing for /macros/latex/contrib/newspaper
If you don't already know LaTeX, this may have a bit of a steeper learning curve, but I highly recommend learning it anyway, so you'll win in two ways

you can search on freshmeat for open source programs

Also, the SlackBuilds repo makes it pretty easy to locate both the homepage of a project and the source downloads.

I do not respond to Private Messages asking for Linux help. Please, keep it on the public boards.
