    I am using the screen command and usiing screen -a to create new screens but the screen number does not appear on the status bar.

    By default, screen does nothing except let you create additional screens. It has no status bars or anything.

    You can either try to figure out how to write a screenrc yourself (this is fairly complicated) or I would suggest using byobu, which creates a much nicer screen experience:
