    Security

I keep getting a message every time I try to use Firefox

Could not initialize the application's security component. The most likely cause is problems with files in your application's profile directory. Please check that this directory has no read/write restrictions and your hard disk is not full or close to full. It is recommended that you exit the application and fix the problem. If you continue to use this session, you might see incorrect application behaviour when accessing security features.

I am assuming you have been using Firefox all along and this just started happening. In this case I would suggest that you have been hacked, a nuisance hack.

I would backup my bookmarks and remove Firefox, completely. Be sure to delete the Firefox directory in /etc. Reinstall, and reload your bookmarks.

Additionally, you can load another browser. Try Iceweasel.

I have encountered such nuisance hacks in the past. Therefore I also keep a command line browser handy (Links2).

Provided it's a newer version of Firefox, click Bookmarks -> Show All Bookmarks -> Import and Backup.
It will make a file containing your bookmarks, which you can restore after you re-install FF.

    Good point.
Two things you can try. From a terminal, try opening Firefox in safe mode:
    Code:
    firefox -safe-mode
If it opens, you can backup your bookmarks from there.
If not, then you should be able to back them up from your file browser (Konqueror, Nautilus, Rox, etc.)
Open a file browser, and hit Ctrl+h to show hidden files.
Open the .mozilla folder, then firefox. There, you should see a folder with a funky name. xxxxxxxx.default. Open that, and you should see the target folder. bookmarkbackups.
    Copy that.
Then you can copy it back when you remove/reinstall Firefox.

*Edited because I missed a folder.
