    what does it mean....

    when my machine boots one of the lines it says sometimes is something to the effect of

    Var has been mounted 20 times without having been checked... force check

    {or 28 times or whatever number of times (presumably the number of times I have booted my machine)}

    I know that's not exactly what it says but it's along those lines. On the basic level I get that it's forcing some sort of check but am I supposed to be checking this "var" thing manually if so what am I supposed to check it for... and or how... etc

    thanx

    These messages are merely informative. They don't mean that anything is wrong - quite the contrary. The whole point is that you never have to check your partitions manually in Linux unless one really has been damaged in some way. They get checked briefly every time you boot and more thoroughly after either a certain number of mounts or a certain fixed time - whichever you prefer.

    Ok so basically it's not a bad thing and It's not something I need to be doing myself... and presumably it sounds like something that won't really harm my system so...

    I was just kind of curious as I really didn't know what it was and if I was being irresponsible or not. Still just kind of learning.

    thanx for the info as I really wouldn't have known that it was related to the file system...

    Cheers

    Like hazel said... it's a default system check.
    It confused the heck out of me the first time I saw it happen, too.
