    Where to start

Hello, My name is Jesse (intro posted in lounge) I am wondering what is the best method/way of going about learning Linux other than just loading it on a computer and using it? I have some experience with it but no formal training or classes and am wondering if there is a book I should use or if this forum will be enough to help me wander my way through the Linux world.

I appreciate any help/advice given and am sure I will be asking all kinds of questions especially when it comes to installing Linux. I have never installed it and don't even know what version I should use. Thanks!

    Jesse

    Hello and welcome!

You can't really learn Linux without actually using it, much like would happen if you tried learning to drive a car or ride a bicycle by reading about it only.

That said, Running Linux (published by O'Reilly) is a popular generic book for some good tips and advice about running and using Linux.

    Good luck with Linux adventures!

Thanks Ozar. I know I really just need to get my hands dirty. I am more looking for something I might be able to use as a reference while messing around in Linux. I know I can use this site but I might not always get the answer right away which is totally fine and to be expected. As I said I have some experience with Linux probably more than I give myself credit for. The servers we had in the Marine Corps were always messing up so I learned a lot during my last year and a half of service when I was working with them.

I guess for now my question would be where should I start for installing Linux what would be the best or most recommended version for a beginner to learn with if that can even be answered. Thanks!

You can check our annual poll for recommended distro for new Linux users:

    http://www.linuxforums.org/forum/cof...rs-2012-a.html

You can also check the "Hits Per Day" chart over at DistroWatch.com to see what distros are currently the most popular there.

Something that might help you out: LinuxCommand.org: Learn the Linux command line. Write shell scripts.
Never hurts to know a few commands while you're at it.

Sweet thanks for the links they should come in Handy. So I think I am going to go with Fedora based on a comment I read on the distro poll thread.
