    Basic text or dumb terminal

    Hey all

I have a old building controller from 1985 that has a old vt220 (text terminal) and the customer is wanting to replace the vt. They are wanting the same setup. Meaning the machine boots, connectes to the panel and does it thing. They also do not want a gui. It connects through RS-232

So what I'm wanting to do is get one of those eee desktops and have it boot into text terminal, automaticly find the USB to serial (as no one makes a pc with serial) then run as a dumb terminal.

    Thanks

Linux comes with the minicom terminal emulator program, which should work just fine as a VT terminal for you. Myself, I'd get a system that is built into the display. That way, you have just a keyboard, mouse, display, and cables. Then you configure it to boot into runlevel 3 (text only), and start the minicom program when they login. And they DO make systems with RS-232 ports still! My workstation w/ Intel motherboard has 2 RS-232 ports, as well as parallel printer port!
Sometimes, real fast is almost as good as real time.
