Liberte: pci.ids missing from hdt directory

After I type my password and the progress bar finishes, a black screen appears that just hangs there.

I posted in greater detail about the problem here (I added an ellipsis before "org" because I'm not allowed to post URLs): linuxforums...org/forum/newbie/187414-liberte-shows-black-screen.html#post883440

However, I did a hardware check from within Liberte, finding that the pci.ids file, whatever that is, is missing and that I must install it in the hdt directory.

I wonder if this is the source of my problem. I'm using Windows 7 64-bit and booting Liberte from a USB.

How do I install the pci.ids file in the hdt directory, and what do these terms mean?

NOTE: I have to use Liberte. Any other Linux OS won't do for what I need.
CAUTION: This is my first time using Linux and you should assume unless otherwise indicated that I don't know any Linux terminology (e.g., compile).

    Thanks for any help.

Have you tried installing the latest version of the file from here:

    http://pciids.sourceforge.net/v2.2/pci.ids

and copying it to where it goes on your Liberte system? If it is Gentoo, i think it goes here:

    Code:
    /usr/share/misc/pci.ids
but you should check your documentation - i'm not familiar w/Gentoo at all.

you could also check for a program that attempts to update it for you:

    Code:
    /usr/sbin/update-pciids
