Hey,
I think you need a keyboard IME for that (Input Method Editor).
What is your distro? If it is Ubuntu-based, check out this Mint tutorial:
Japanese Input on Linux Mint 13 Maya LTS (Mate) - Localizing Japan
If something else, you can hopefully still install the packages made available by your distro.

I emerged ibus on my gentoo. Also uim.
But I'm not able to setup them right.

Have you any idea for Vietnamese input with French keyboard ? Ubuntu 12.10 in Notebook.
