Choosing distro, used to use linux

Hello, I am an old time Linux user (arch Linux, Ubuntu, suse) but I stopped using it as it was slower and more buggy than windows (for me at least). I would now like to use a virtual machine for some programming, and I would appreciate if someone could point me in the right direction:
I would like a simple operating system, that can run C and prolog and can edit databases (maybe Microsoft access on wine? libreoffice is awful). I don't care about how open-source it is. And a windows xp like desktop environment would be nice also.

Try Zorin, Lubuntu, or Xubuntu. Mageia is coming along nicely also. Welcome back.
