    quick 1

    if i copy

    cp /etc/passwd .

    that will copy the passwd file to my current directory

    is . always the current directory???

    .. is the parent right?

    Yes, . is the current pwd.
    .. is the parent directory, with the exception of the root directory /, where .. resolves to /
