Cool Toshiba 64 bit laptop A305-S6837 Ubuntu?

My laptop windows Vista 64 bit is corrupt with directory names changed to Alpha/numeric thus not allowing the computer to boot up.

I have forced it to boot in safe mode once....and was able to copy pictures and important files to a thumb drive.

I did a diagnostic and found the cd drive was full of errors....reading head screwed up I suppose.

So....I purchased a 1TB Passport drive to try and load Ubuntu on it and also to use it to back up my mainframe.

Can someone help me with the process?

    Thanks!!
