CENTOS extremely laggy even after clean install

I recently installed CENTOS on a cheap windows 7 laptop that I had figuring it would run smoother than windows 7. In actuality CENTOS has been extremely laggy since the insall. Takes several seconds to bring up fire fox etc. Web pages slow to load but speed testing showing 18 download and pings are timely so its definitely the UI thats lagging.

Does anyone know why this might be ? This is a cheap machine but it ran win 7 without much issue. Please see cpuinfo file below for specs.

Also it seems like flash is killing my cpu. Is this normal?

    Thank you.

    hey,

How much memory do you have installed on your system?

Also, have you tried a light-weight distro, like Puppy Linux? They tend to run a bit snappier on older PCs.

btw, Flash is infamous for hogging CPU cycles, from version to version and platform to platform. If you are using Youtube, have you tried switching to HTML5?

    Hey,

    Thank you for responding.

    [root@localhost Downloads]# free -m
total used free shared buffers cached
    Mem: 3433 1564 1868 0 81 897
    -/+ buffers/cache: 585 2847
    Swap: 3567 0 3567

Is it possible to use HTML5 in liue of flash for streaming videos from say amazon prime for fox full episodes?

looks like you've got plenty RAM.

i think w/Amazon Instant Video is Flash-only, unfortunately.

Have you installed the Catalyst display drivers? (howto)

I have installed the driver and it is still extremely choppy. Its not just flash. It also happens loading webpages but again I dont believe it to be a connection issue.

Any help anyone could give would be appreciated. Let me know what outputs you need to see please.
