How do you mean "see" the other machine? I'm guessing that you're still stuck to the thinking of the Microsoft Windows Network Neighborhood, is that not so?

Just ping the machine and see so that it responds. If you want to share files, you can use NFS. There's a great HOWTO on NFS on tldp.org.
