I need a fileserver, Samba solutions?

I need to setup a file server on our internal LAN for around 70+ people who will be accessing the shared information at the same time. All clients will be running Windows XP Pro, so whatever share is accessed will need to be a Windows share.

Problem: Windows XP Professional has a 10 connection limit.
Problem: Windows Server, not going to shell out the $$$ for features I'll never use and the cash I don't have.

I would like to know if you have any suggestions on one of the more stable, easier, and non-bloated builds of Linux that might be used for the task. Just pop RedHat on, server style, with Samba share? Any pitfalls, golden tidbits I can gleam on the task?

Just need the basics, Samba share, and a firewall to block every other port not being used by the Samba server.
