How do I edit and compile the kernel

I am fairly new to the linux field, all the experience i've had is with Fedora in class were i learned how to make a server, and i worked with Somba a little bit.

I have Redhat 9.0 (shrike) installed on the second hard drive on my computer (XP is on the first hard disk)

Anyways I cannot get my soundcard to work and all the instructions i find on the web don't tell me how to get into the Kernel they just tell me the pieces of code that i have to add to it. (My soundcard is a soundblaster live! btw)

I'm very interested in Linux but i've primarily messed with Dos and Windows for most of my lfie so Linux is a foriegn language to me
