    Help! -- Cannot access external Zip drive. What's wrong???

    Hello all!

    Linux newbie here.

    I have a Dell machine with WinXP in one partition and RedHat Linux in the other. I have an external 250Mb Iomega USB zip drive that I would like to be able to access when I'm using Linux.
    I thought that I had the /etc/fstab file cofigured correctly but it seems not.

    Can someone help with suggestions?
    Here is the /etc/fstab code:

    LABEL=/ / ext3 defaults 1 1
    LABEL=/boot /boot ext3 defaults 1 2
    none /dev/pts devpts gid=5,mode=620 0 0
    LABEL=/home /home ext3 defaults 1 2
    none /proc proc defaults 0 0
    none /dev/shm tmpfs defaults 0 0
    LABEL=/usr /usr ext3 defaults 1 2
    LABEL=/var /var ext3 defaults 1 2
    /dev/hda8 swap swap defaults 0 0
    /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy auto noauto,owner,kudzu 0 0
    /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom udf,iso9660 noauto,owner,kudzu,ro 0 0

    /dev/sda /mnt/zipdrive vfat, noauto,user,rw 0 0
    /dev/sda1 /mnt/usbdrive vfat, noauto,user,rw 0 0

    Please let me know if there is anything else that is needed to figure this problem out.
    Thank you in advance!
    ---Nick

    Re: Help! -- Cannot access external Zip drive. What's wrong?

    I doubt that I can help much since I'm not a RH user but it is an interesting issue so............:

    You did'nt say what the "problem" actually is other than you can't access it so I'm wondering if the drive has been found but just that you can't see it???

    Perhaps you can verify this by
    Code:
     dmesg | grep -i usb
    and

    Code:
    dmesg | grep -i zip
    registered Linux user #388382

    Have you checked here first?

    I'm another with no answers, only guidance. My internal ZIP drive has only a partition "4", that is, in my case: /dev/hdc4. I think that's a peculiarity common with ZIP drives, certainly with IDE ZIPs and I'd guess with others as well. Of course your problem is compounded with the USB. Can you verify that the USB port works as it should: boot, hot-plug and whatever? Is that a comma after the vfat? I'd take it out. And it doesn't matter where you mount it TO, as long as the mount point exists. There is a directory /mnt/usbdrive? if not, it won't happen.
    Code:
    /dev/sda4               /mnt/usbdrive           vfat    noauto,user,rw    0 0

    That's great. So what was the actual problem: USB, fstab, other? Your answer will be helpful when someone searches here with a similar problem.
