Hi, im new to all this Linux stuff, I installed Red Hat about 5 years ago, got confused and gaveup, now im sick of windows and have come back!!!

Im trying to install Ndiswrapper so that i can get me linksys wireless modem working, im using the install guide given on the Ndiswrapper website, but whenever i try and use the Make or Make Install commands, it seems to do something, but then the last few lines of code say soemthing along the lines of:

    Code:

    You don't have gcc installed:

    make[2]: gcc: Command not found
Go out and find an RPM for gcc and install that. Then try compiling ndiswrapper again.

youd think finding and installing this gcc wasnt to difficult. Its supposed to be present on the Fendora 3 cd's, but i cant install it cause it brings up umpteen errors saying im missing files.

    Hrmm...

Sadly, I'm not familiar with FC's package management system. My only suggestion, therefore, would be to manually install RPMs for each of the dependencies.

Basically, gcc is the GNU C Compiler, and you need it to compile source code. Sadly, if you don't have gcc, you have to use RPMs for everything.

I still don't understand why some distros don't have gcc by default. Linux without a C Compiler is like eating Spaghetti with your mouth sewn shut. It just doesn't make sense.

right, got ndiswrapper installed, also got the drivers installed to, ran:

    Code:
     ndiswrapper -l
its saying that the driver is installed, and the hardware is pressent, but i cant work out how to get the card to connect to the network. I was hoping i could select it in the "network" option in the applications menu (gnome gui). But its not in the list of cards. Anyone got this far and know what im supposed to do now??

Oh and it seems that fedora core had an older version of gcc installed, but as far as i can tell i needed to download an update from their website.

    Yes indeedy!

    Run this:

    Code:
    iwconfig wlan0
You should get a bunch of stuff. Here's what you need to run:

    Code:
    iwconfig wlan0 essid <YOUR SSID HERE>
    iwconfig wlan0 key <ENCRYPTION KEY HERE>
Only do the second if you use WEP encryption.

You now need to tie it all together:

    Code:
    dhcpcd -t 5 wlan0
This will connect you to your network with a timeout of 5 seconds.

Now then, if the above don't work, here's what you need:

iwconfig is part of the wireless-tools package. You will need to install that.

    dhcpcd is its own package.

So yeah, install those, run those commands, and all should be happy.
