how to unistall LILO when lilo -u doesn't work

i have knoppix 3.7 but this problem is not connected to any specific distro, but to Linux in general.
when i try to unistall lilo and i type 'lilo -u' i am rejected and suggested to use 'lilo -U' instead. can i safely use this command? or i have to manually remove lilo? if so, where?

    You should try /sbin/lilo -u

If that doesn't work, try "man lilo" for more instructions.

You can just overwrite the MBR with another bootloader like GRUB, assuming LILO's in the MBR.

lilo is on Linux partition, not in mbr.

let's say if i cannot unistall lilo thru shell, which files should i delete manually ? lilo.conf maybe?
