    Screenresolution problem

    Hi,

I have just installed kubuntu and my first impression is good . One thing though, the native resolution of my screen is 1280 x 854 (yes, it's a laptop ), but in kde I can only choose from

    1280x800
    1280x768
    1152x768
    1024x768
    800x600
    640x480

In the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file the only resolution in there is 1280x854. How do I get the correct resolution and where does xserver get those other resolutions from?

Thanks in advance for any help

Find the Screen section of your X config file (/etc/X11/xorg.conf or /etc/X11/XFree86-4.conf or something for XF86). It should look something like:
    Code:
    Section "Screen"
            Identifier "Screen0"
            Device "Videocard0"
            Monitor "Monitor0"
            DefaultDepth 24
            SubSection "Display"
                    Viewport 0 0
                    Depth 16
                    Modes "640x480"
            EndSubSection
            SubSection "Display"
                    Viewport 0 0
                    Depth 24
                    Modes "1280x1024" "1152x864" "1152x768" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
            EndSubSection
    EndSection
Find the display subsection with our default color depth and add your resolution right after "Modes ".

No, that's not it. My screen section looks like this:

    Section "Screen"
    Identifier "Default Screen"
Device "NVIDIA Corporation NV34M [GeForce FX Go 5200]"
    Monitor "Generic Monitor"
    DefaultDepth 24
    SubSection "Display"
    Depth 1
    Modes "1280x854"
    EndSubSection
    SubSection "Display"
    Depth 4
    Modes "1280x854"
    EndSubSection
    SubSection "Display"
    Depth 8
    Modes "1280x854"
    EndSubSection
    SubSection "Display"
    Depth 15
    Modes "1280x854"
    EndSubSection
    SubSection "Display"
    Depth 16
    Modes "1280x854"
    EndSubSection
    SubSection "Display"
    Depth 24
    Modes "1280x854"
    EndSubSection
    EndSection

And I did not modify it yet, this is the configuration ubuntu came up with itself... And that's why I'm so cunfused about all those resolution I can choose from; they're not in the xorg.conf file...[/i]

just replace 1280x854 with 1280x1024 in the depth 24 section and you should be good to go

That didn't work. I replaced all the 1280x854's with 1280x1024 (and rebooted), but with no effect.

I'm still confused about how I can choose from 7 different resolution settings, while ther isonly one enclosed in the xorg.conf file, and yet that one is not available...

Isn't there another configuration file in which I have to put the 1280x854 resolution? At first, I was quite happy with 1280x800, because I tried the Debian Sarge installation before kubuntu and had problems compiling a new kernel and including the nvidia driver, so my resolution was only 800x600. But now I would like for those black area's on my screen to disappear...

    Solved it!

I googled again in search of Linux on a laptop similair to mine, and found an Italian site. Since I don't speak Italian I didn't look at this site the last time google listed it, but now i did. And found a xorg.conf file on it!

The problem was in the monitor section, but it was one I could have never figured out myself, becuse those fiures are not in my manual. I had to put this in my monitor section:

    Code:
    Mode "1280x854"
      #D: 79.815 MHz, H: 51.963 kHz, V: 60.003 Hz
      DotClock 79.816
      HTimings 1280 1296 1408 1536
      VTimings 854 855 858 866
      Flags "-HSync" "-VSync"
     EndMod
But still, it works. A nice touvh is that in this file twinview is also configured. But since I don't have the same graphics card and the name of the nvidia driver is different, I don't have the guts to copy the whole bunch.

For others who have a gericom hollywood laptop, the mitac 8060 is almost the same, so take a look at the link:

    http://www.linux.it/~napo/index.php/...nuxOnMitac8060

Everyone who helped, thank you very much, it's my first time on a forum and I'm glad you answered my call. And within a few hours too! I'll be back with more need of help in the near future I think .

I'm glad you got that fixed so quick, that's great. I remember suffering with my 1920x1200 on my first 5-6 distros, but thankfully Xorg now supports this resolution. I used to have to add modelins by hand every time I loaded a distro!
