Emacs is a text editor with lots of features that are handy for programmers. It offers syntax highlighting, support for script-language addins, and just about every feature you could think of (and some you couldn't, like Tetris and a digital psychologist). Is it important? Depends on what you want to do with it. If you're just going to do quick editing of text files it's a bit of overkill.

Yeah. Emacs is good. I think I downloaded it when I reinstalled Ubuntu. I really should check. But it's useful for HTML and stuff like that instead of the text editor.

Edit: I said HTML. I ment C++ whoops.
