    Live cd's won't run!!

First of all: I have never used linux before.
I tried to use a live dvd on my laptop. I downloaded knoppix and slax but when I try to run them they load up to the point it refers to pcmcia and they just stop there. On slax i tried "slax nopcmcia" and it loaded but although xconf run fine when i go for startx it says error, vesa something and many more things i dont really get....
The laptop is quite new with ati x700 on.
Is it possible to have a live cd running (with some sound and internet through my ethernet card at least) or should i forget linux??

I managed to run knoppix with nopcmcia.
I have no sound though..if i run sound setup it says it is not supported from the kernel or something like that....
Also i cant configure my ethernet connection...
I am pretty sure it found the card (initial command line screen it says network card ethe0)...
    Any help???
