The installer uses X Windows, which isn't allowed with regular su privileges. Try this:

Code:
xhost +
su
password:<root password>
Then run the SH file.

When I try 'xhost +' this comes up:

You can install the Quake 3 demo into your home directory as a regular user. Try running the SH file without logging in as root and see what happens.

Does the window close on its own? It should stay up for a bit and then a separate install window will pop up.

It comes up for less than a second then disappears by itself.
