I haven't used SUID in the past but I heard about it and I thought it would be a nice way to run Synaptic and apt-get without having to su to root. PAM's nice but it doesn't seem to register in GNOME. So I set the permissions to 4755 on apt-get and synaptic which should have it run as the owner (root). However, it's giving me permission issues and I noticed in htop it's running as the user account not root. This happened under RHEL4 and Ubuntu. What am I missing? If I ls -l the file I'm seeing -rwsr-xr-x which seems like what I should have.
