If you want sources, the first step is naming the distro (ubuntu, debian stable/sarge, debian testing/etch, an RPM based distro etc.).
For ubuntu, you should check the ubuntuguide site (the latest ubuntu is http://ubuntuguide.squarecows.com/doku.php )
For debian, maybe check out http://www.apt-get.org/ they have a huge list
