audio in kde and other programs at the same time

hi.. i am using fedora core 1... I was using the default sound system that came with the distribution. When i ran aMSN or Kopete and xmms, if i was playing some music with xmms, the sound events on aMSN or Kopete wouldn't play... So i decided to upgrade to alsa 1.0.2. I did so but i am still having the same problem...

my question is: is there a way to be able to play audio in two different programs at the same time?

ive got kernel 2.4.22-1.2115.nptl and my card uses intel i810 chipset!

    thanks a lot!

The only way I know of is to use ESD for all your sounds. XMMS should have an ESD output plugin, and I know GAIM has the option to use it. It works for me that way.
