Xine, mplayer, VLC, Kaffeine, Totem etc. Most use the mplayer or Xine backend with the exception of VLC. If you can't problem it may be that xine/mplayer is crippled in your distro. What distro are you using?

I thought that AVIs could be played natively, but you may need to install the win32 codec package:
