Audio file is playing, but no sound

Hey, Gurus. I am really new to linux, plz bear with me. I have Redhat9.0 installed. I assume my pc's sound card is working properly bacause it's tested with commmand "/usr/bin/redhat-config-soundcard" under terminal. Subsequenly, there was a pop-up window came up with:
The following audio device was detected.
    Vendor: VIA Technologies
    Model: VT8233 AC97 Audio Controller
    Module: via82cxxx_audio.

and i was able to hear the testing music was playing after i clicked the "Play test sound" button. However, there was no sound comes up when i tried playing mp3 files or CD albums with XMMS. Could anyone shed some lights on me. Any help is highly appreciated.

thanx very much, heatsmagic. i've downloaded two files: xmms-1.2.7-21.i386.rpm and xmms-mpg123-1.2.7-21.i386.rpm and put them under /var/tmp/MMX ma3 patch/ dir. Now, i was asked to enter admin password after i double clicked the file. then, i tried double click the file again to install it, but the error msg " The file blah/blah coud not be read. Make sure that you have the proper persmission on it" pops up. Could anyone plz help me overcome this prob. I wonder ain't i suppose to have exclusive permission on everything after i entered the admin password?

    any help is highly appreciated.

I think you have already XMMS . SO just install the mpeg part .To do this open a shell then
    Code:
    su -
    give your root password and
    Code:
    rpm -ivh xmms-mpg123-1.2.7-21.i386.rpm
    which dir the file is.
