    there is xmms for mp3 files....you can get it with apt-get or aptitude or synaptic package manager

    install AutoMatix and select 'Non Free Audio/Video Codecs' from 'AutoMatix' list. you can install a lot of useful packages through it.

    Check out https://wiki.ubuntu.com/RestrictedFormats for installing the mp3 libraries. Most any gstreamer-based audio players will play mp3s after you do this.
