Have you tried swapping to the OSS plugin instead?

Hello - yes ... xmms can't use ALSA unless the ALSA software plugin is installed and enabled. I'm not a Gentoo user but I think this may be available via Portage?
Once installed you can select the plugin from within xmms. The menu structure is a little strange though, and you may need to look under 'visualisation plugins'.
If you have trouble using Portage, the plugin can be found on the xmms website, but the site was down when I checked just now.
::Edit:: Just read Moe's post above. I'm assuming the plugin isn't already installed. This could generate that error message.I am always doing that which I can not do, in order that I may learn how to do it. - Pablo Picasso

Have you installed ALSA already? Did you compile it as a module? Did you disable OSS completely?
If you have done all that already emerge alsa-utils and use alsaconf to configure your sound card.
Then you can add it to the boot process with rc-updatePut your hand in an oven for a minute and it will be like an hour, sit beside a beautiful woman for an hour and it will be like a minute, that is relativity. --Albert Einstein
