    setting up secure firewall

Hi people - i'm not only new to linux but also a complete computer dunce ! I'm trying to set up my Netgear DG834 wired firewall router for good security. ( I've yet to settle on a prefered brand of linux - messing with free live cd's from magazines. ) Heres the question : all the beginners guides to firewalls give lots of advice about how to block and open various ports and services depending on what you decide you need and dont need; thing is ....I've no idea what services i need and dont need ! I have a basic home pc set up, broadband via the netgear and dont really do anything fancy! Basic web surfing , email, and the kids seem exclusively connected to youtube, ebay, and msn ! What should i be blocking, switching off or keeping ? I'm hoping this isn't one of those ' how long is a piece of string ? ' questions ! Any ideas ?

Guarddog is a good firewall to try. It's defaults are pretty good and it has options to select openings for programs rather than individual ports.
