Is Linux worth the headache? Help please!
:drown:
I got the Knoppix DVD about 2 weeks ago. I got it to work occasionally when I rebooted my computer. I did a CD test on it. It all came back ok. I checked my Bios, made sure that I was booting from CD and DVD first, I even held down the tab button so the boot menu would come up and select boot from CD. So I gave up on the DVD, thinking their was an unknown error on it and downloaded a version of Knoppix to burn on CD. I had the same problem with the CD, I even opened up the CD drives before restarting my computer and held down the save disk because someone said that might work. I love animals, but I think penguins hate me. My computer is a Gateway 500s, I have 512 MB of RAM, system is Microsoft XP Home Edition Version 2002, Service Pack 2 it is an Intel Pentium 4 CPU 1.80 GHz 1.79 GHz My floppy drive hasn't worked in some time, I think one of the kids might have put peanut butter in it once. I also ran a test on the CD and it all came back ok. I thought their might have been a problem with my computer, I have kids that play games on it, so I reformatted my computer to try to get it back to factory specs. I got the CD to work once after I did this. That was 4 days ago. I know some of this information might be useless, like the floppy drive, but I figured it might have been something simple that I am overlooking and someone might read this and say," Hey, there is his problem." Man, I am really hoping someone says that. Thanks in advance

Are you using any of the boot 'cheat codes' when you try and boot Knoppix?
There's a list on their web site, you can try different codes to troubleshoot.

No, I did not try that, I am very new to this. I know that awhile ago I held down the R button and Knoppix came up, I did it as a joke to read the dvd. Simple minded logic, lol. Or R for reaching, but that only worked once. I will look into that. Do I type in a code in the Bios or is it when the Knoppix screen comes up? Because the Knoppix screen don't come up very often. Just once in a blue moon.

Cheat codes are entered on the first Knoppix screen where it says boot: at the bottom. You would type knoppix and the cheat code like:
boot: knoppix acpi=off.
Did you say you're not even getting that far?

If I can get to the boot screen than it works fine, but 90% of the time I can't even get the boot screen to load.
I also ran the Memtest86+ V1.65, I stopped the test but I believe that it was just looping
because it said it passed 10 tests and it looked like it was testing the same thing over and over. I let the test run for a total time of 3 hours and 45 minutes.

So you're booting the computer with the CD in it, and it only comes up once in a while? Do you have another computer available to try the cd or dvd in just to verify?
It also may have something to do with how the cd was burned, but I'm too new to understand that myself. I suppose just as a coincidence both discs could have been bad.

It is a mystery to me. Thank You. Harry Mud.
