    booting problem...(bootloader = bye bye)

ok, so i had SUSE and my friend suggested i use Ubuntu instead. So i got the cd and installed it then took the cd out and restarted. Now here lies my problem, its a dual boot system with windows xp prof and ubuntu now. The SUSE partition got formated with the boot loader on it, now whenever i start up i get this error message:
    Code:
    GRUB Loading Stage1.5.

    GRUB loading, please wait...
    Error 17
as far as i can tell ubuntu didnt install a bootloader with it, can someone help.

GRUB couldn't find /boot partition. boot up from Ubuntu Cd and post the output of 'sudo fdisk -l' command. post the contents of menu.lst file. its loaction is
    /dev/<ubuntu_partition>/boot/grub/menu.lst

You could try installing again, but this time look out for the bootloader section -- make sure to install the bootloader to the MBR (this may be in the "advanced section" of the ubuntu installation, as it is with SUSE).

I have to admit that this is the lazy way to do it (the way I would do it ), and I'm sure that devils_casper will be able to help you to do it without reinstallation (and in a way that will let you learn more about linux).

Ubuntu Desktop CD doesn't give any option for Boot Loader. it installs GRUB in MBR by default. only Ubuntu Alternate CD provides all the options for Boot Loader, its location etc.

I wasn't aware of that. I was guessing that it would be very similar to the SUSE installation, so thanks for correcting me.
