This Linux newbie just got Ubuntu 6.06.1 - DVD

I finally got my Ubuntu 6.06.1 - DVD. Man, this is some really great stuff! Now, I really want to get rid of Windows more than ever. I've been missing out!

I've just been booting up from and playing with the DVD. I haven't downloaded the system to my hard drive yet. I am not proficient enough for that.

I'm finding my way around pretty easily. Most of it is self-explanatory.

Of course, now I have a myriad of questions and things that I need to learn. I'm getting busy. I need to get drivers for my HP printer. I need to find a program for building my Web sites. Don't I need a program to partition the hard drive so I can upload Ubuntu and keep Windows while I am learning and setting things up? Lots for me to do. I have to start browsing the forum and find out more now that I have the DVD.

Thanks to all, for your input and your help,
    Mudjack

I wasn't aware there was a DVD version of Ubuntu available. Where did you get it? All I've ever found are single CDROMs.

I need to get drivers for my HP printer.
You may not have to download any separate drivers for it. A lot of devices "just work" in Linux due to included drivers that ship with the OS. There's a driver package in Linux called hpijs if I remember correctly that specifically deals with HP printers.

I need to find a program for building my Web sites.
Nvu, Bluefish or SeaMonkey (with Mozilla Composer) will probably work for you.

The Ubuntu installer can handle the partitioning on the Linux side for you, but you'll need to make some space for it. If you have XP on the whole drive you'll need to defrag and resize the partition to open up some free space on the end (6-8GB is enough). Leave that space unpartitioned and unformatted and the Ubuntu installer will use that. To resize your XP partition you can use GParted or Partition Magic.

My HP printer (Deskjet 940C) works perfectly with plain vanilla Ubuntu 6.06.
There are several programs available for building Web sites. You can choose one after installing Linux.
cfdisk will work to partition the hard drive. Make sure you defragment the Windows partition, and be VERY CAREFUL when resizing it.

I would suggest to use gparted which is included in ubuntu's cd to resize windows, cfdisk only can delete and create new partitions.

I finally got my Ubuntu 6.06.1 - DVD.
There's a DVD for the three architechtures, with this you can install it in i386, ppc and amd64 with just one disk.

For partitioning I highly recommend the Gparted LiveCD

I downloaded the Gparted LiveCD. Once I get software that will open the file - is this all I will need to partition my disc?

    Thanks,

as Juan Pablo already wrote, GParted is already there in Ubuntu DVD.

well ! you downloaded .iso image of GParted, dont open it with any software. just burn this image to CD. you can use Nero for that. select 'Burn Image to Disk' in Nero.
