First, I don't know how you figured how to install Gentoo being a Linux newbie, how?

Install an easier distro. With Gentoo you will have to deal with tons of options.
    Which distro?

You might consider switching to a distro that will have a much smaller learning curve. You will eventually be pretty adept if you learn to get stuff working with gentoo, but you will probably be very frustrated in the process. Since your friend installed it, he knows what's been configured and compiled and in what order, and he might have an idea how to get media functionality. For instance, sometimes you have to recompile stuff after installing other stuff (depending on Use flags, etc.). One thing to try, run the command from a terminal "mplayer" or "kmplayer", and try to read the errors that show up.

Again, you might consider going with an easier to configure distro.

Yes, use GParted. You can use a live cd http://gparted.sourceforge.net/livecd.php
