    Usually the gentoo livecd drops you into a terminal with root permissions, but your hard drive isn't mounted. What exactly do you want to do?

    I assume you're referring to the graphical LiveCD?

    That uses sudo instead of su. You can prefix commands with sudo to run them as root, or you can run "sudo passwd", set a root password, then use su to become root.

    I didn't even realize they had a graphical livecd. sorry.

    Yeah: it's a 700MB disc with the infamous graphical installer. I've been using it for a Linux class I'm teaching, otherwise I wouldn't know this either .

    I'd be curious to know how well it works and if it makes the gentoo install easier, but I don't mean to hijack the thread.
